How Do I Become A Piano Teacher?

How do I become a piano teacher? If this is a career you are interested in pursuing, then this is a question you really must ask. For those who are wondering how do I become a piano teacher, the actual answer is years upon years of practice, theory, scales, lectures, and a sincere desire to share your love of all of these things with others is a great place to start. While there is no exact path to take when finding out how do I become a piano teacher, a good place to start is in college.

Most people in today's society prefer that piano teachers have at least a bachelor's degree in piano or music. While you do not have to have a degree in education in order to teach private lessons, some parents prefer this. I honestly feel that if you do not need the piano certification (meaning you don't plan to teach in schools) that you use your precious college hours to focus on learning the piano better rather than taking the massive number of education courses required to receive certification to teach in schools.

While I am a huge advocate of education, there are many teachers who can answer the question how do I become a piano teacher without needing a college education. Many excellent pianists actually have no college education and it really doesn't impair their ability to teach others to play piano. You will find this much more commonly in small towns than in larger towns. Small towns often place less emphasis on education and more emphasis on ability.

The truth of the matter however, is that you really need to look around at the other piano teachers and find out what qualifications they have. Ask them the question "How do I become a piano teacher?" and hope that they will tell you what they did. If the vast majority of teachers in your area have degrees, you are going to have to work a little harder to build an adequate clientele. It can be done but will require hard work and consistency.

Remember that if you have a deep and abiding love for the instrument and the music you will be much more likely to impress your students and their parents. That often goes much farther when obtaining students than degrees, letters, and numbers. Being you is often the best way to answer, "How do I become a piano teacher?"
