Why do you want to be a piano teacher? This is a question that every potential piano teacher must ask of him/herself at some point in their career, preferably before beginning said career. A piano teacher doesn't simply wake up one day and decide that's what they'll be. It's not an easy career and even to consider becoming a piano teacher takes years of training just to develop the skills necessary to teach the very basic beginning students.
While most people when learning to play the piano do not dream of becoming a piano teacher, they are at the very least establishing some of the skills that this particular type of teacher would need in their careers. Most piano teachers are people who love music and love playing the piano. The piano and the gift of music are gifts teachers can give to their students that will continue long after that teacher is no longer teaching that student. These are gifts that will never be forgotten or outgrown. The gift of music is one of the kindest gifts a person can give to another person.
It is important to remember though that it took years to gain a certain level of proficiency in playing the piano. You need to develop a new group of skills in order to be a successful piano teacher. You will also need an additional set of skills in order to teach piano for your primary source of income, particularly if you own your piano teaching business. Business skills come less naturally to most musicians than teaching and as such are often the part that is most disagreeable and often overlooked during the operation of that business.
A piano teacher is often responsible for inspiring his or her students to achieve greater feats and meet growing challenges as pianists. He or she is also responsible for helping students work through those areas that are less appealing than others. We must be demanding of our students as well as of ourselves. If our business skills are more challenging than playing the piano, we owe it to our students to work through the challenges. Working through the unpalatable things makes everything else taste so much better.
