Piano Teaching Business
Your Piano Teaching Business?
Beginning a piano teaching business can be both a frightening and an exciting proposition. It doesn't matter if this is your first endeavor or you've been teaching for another institution for years, there is a certain thrill involved in stepping out on your own and going into business for yourself. A piano teaching business can be quite rewarding as well as quite profitable if you take the time to create a carefully thought out business plan. A good business plan is vital for every business whether it is a piano teaching business or a restaurant. That is very important to remember.
I remember once lamenting that few people took my business seriously and most considered it more of a hobby than a legitimate business. My husband spoke perhaps the wisest words to ever come out of his mouth. He told me that it was unfair of me to expect others to take my business seriously until I took my business seriously. He was so right in that statement and it holds true for any business. Your piano teaching business is doomed to failure if you do not treat it as a business and give it the respect, time, planning and energy it deserves.
Your piano teaching business is more than your studio or classroom time. It is the time preparing, the time between lessons, the time juggling accounts and handling billing. It is also your advertising methods, your growth projections, and how you manage your time. Additionally, it is the equipment you have, maintaining that equipment, balancing your home life and your business (piano teachers don't have the luxury of bankers hours), and most importantly it is how you handle your business.
The rewards of owning your piano teaching business lie in the fact that you can be home with your children during the day (if you have small children) and arrange your schedule so that your spouse can watch the children while you are teaching. This means that your children have little or no time in day care, which for many is reason enough to begin a piano teaching business. Other benefits include the commute, particularly if your studio is in or attached to your home, which I highly recommend. The third and perhaps most often overlooked benefit to owning this type of business is the profit potential.
While some may find the intrinsic rewards to be worth the effort that goes into owning a piano teaching business, most of us cannot rely on those things to pay for the equipment and keep food on the table. The fact is that most piano teachers undervalue their worth substantially and seriously undercharge. They also mismanage their time and fail to maximize their income per work hour. It is also helpful for you to understand why it is important to get paid what you are actually worth.
