Piano Teaching Method

Choosing Your Piano Teaching Method

When deciding to teach piano you must also decide which piano teaching method you want to use in your business. There are many ways to teach piano and it is important to keep in mind that no one piano teaching method is monumentally better than another and at some point in your career you will probably have to utilize more than one piano teaching method in order to reach various students.

If you are wondering about which piano teaching method will work best for you in the beginning, it might be a wise idea to attend a workshop with other professional piano teachers in the area. These workshops generally will address one or more teaching methods and give a brief rundown of them. You can generally find books that will give more detailed descriptions and guidance online and occasionally at your local library.

Another great way to discover the piano teaching method that you prefer is to audit the lessons of other established piano teachers in your area. You would of course need to obtain their permission in order to do so. It would be a professional courtesy to establish your own professional code of conduct from the beginning and tell them why you wish to audit and observe their classes. Most professional teachers will welcome the observation and feel quite flattered that you wish to model your teaching method after them. Others will not want to contribute to the competition and that is all right as there will be others.

Join a local organization for music teachers and attend the workshops they offer. This can be a great way to learn about and choose the piano teaching method you would prefer to use during the beginning of your career. Keep in mind that you will have the opportunity to learn and study more methods over the course of your career and may utilize several for different reasons. Don't marry yourself to the notion that one piano teaching method fits all because that is rarely the case. Each student will face different challenges and need different motivations in order to address and overcome them.

It would be a shame to let a student down because you were afraid to try a new piano teaching method. It is also important to understand that you may be obtaining students from other teachers at different points in their learning process who have studied different methods. You need to at least be familiar with these methods so that you can relate to the training that your students have had and where to go from here. Most students will have a hard time transitioning if their previous piano teaching method was working for them.
