Remember that teaching piano goes well beyond the actual amount of time you will spend actually teaching your students one on one. You need a piano teaching system that encompasses every aspect of your business from billing to teaching and preparing for lessons to time in and outside of the actual studio.
Developing a piano teaching system early on in the process will save you a lot of trial and error as your business grows and evolves. Your system doesn't have to be a lifelong system but it should be a system that will serve you well for the time being while allowing room for growth and evolution as well. All to often piano teachers find one method of teaching or organization and never introduce other possibilities into their line of thought. We must constantly seek growth and set new goals both personally and professionally. Your piano teaching system should include different lessons and lesson plans for beginning students, first time students, theory students, advanced students, very young children, and adult students. Each of these particular students will have different needs and bring with them different experiences. You need to have a plan in place or a system that will address all the needs without having to constantly invent a new plan or system. You also need to have a method of identifying trouble spots and develop various exercises (and keep them on file) for dealing with these pesky problems. You never know when another student will have the same problem. It makes little sense to do the same work twice if you do not have to.
Your business plan is the only thing that is really more important than your system. Your business plan will have your goals for your business and the growth of your business. Your piano teaching system will have your exercises, lesson plans, thoughts, and ideas for improving your teaching skills.
