Professional Music Teacher
Becoming A Professional Music Teacher
A professional music teacher is a special person. Music is one of the greatest gifts that society has to offer and those who share this gift and this joy with others are special people indeed. The truth is that not all gifted musicians can become a professional music teacher. This profession requires more than a simple passion for and knowledge of music. It also demands a love of people and a selflessness that many wonderful and talented musicians don't quite have. That being said, the decision to become a professional music teacher is not one to be taken lightly.
If you have the skills that it takes to become a professional music teacher, chances are that you've studied your instrument (or voice) quite thoroughly. You should be very familiar not only with the how's of making music but also why these things work and how they work in harmony with other instruments, choral programs, or vocal accompaniment. It is very common for a professional music teacher to have some degree of proficiency on more than one instrument, often choosing several. It is also true that most will have a first love among their instruments or one instrument that is nearest and dearest in their heart and mind. This doesn't mean that they aren't perfectly capable and able to teach the other instruments they know well.
Most professional music teachers are more than slightly aware of the fact that most of their students will at some point in time move on. Students will either find a new instructor to help them work through specific problems or give up their instrument all together in time. This is one of the many reasons that it is so vitally important to keep a steady supply of advertisements running. As a result of continuous advertising you have a steady stream of new students, new inquiries, and if possible a waiting list of at least a couple of months at all times. The more in demand you are as a teacher, the more in demand you are likely to remain. In order to achieve this you must constantly advertise.
Word of mouth is by far the best advertising a professional music teacher can hope for. This particular type of advertising however is slow to build up and you need something to keep you going until you reach that point. Don't allow yourself to be overshadowed by your competition. Be consistent with your advertising and it will serve you well.
There is a great deal of love and joy that goes into the role of being a professional music teacher. It is important that you remember the countless hours you've invested in your instrument and honing your talents. A doctor or a lawyer spends very little time by comparison perfecting their talents and often charge considerably more for their services. People need music and while I'm not advocating charging doctor or attorney fees for your services, it is important that you do not relegate yourself into the realm of minimum wage either. Your time and talent is valuable and you should not shortchange yourself. Check out our ebook to see how we can help you make an honest and comfortable living as a professional music teacher. ...
