Start Up A Piano Studio
How To Start Your Piano Studio
When building a start up piano studio there are many things you need to keep in mind. The first of these things is location, location, location. This is important mainly because the business of teaching piano lessons is often one that will not occur during daylight hours. As such, it is important that you build your start up piano studio in a place that will be convenient and safe even after dark. It's almost always a great idea to build a start up piano studio within your home if possible. This keeps overhead at a minimum, which is important for new businesses. If you do not like this arrangement, you can always change it as your business grows. The idea in the beginning is to have the least expenses possible in order to maximize your profits.
A start up piano studio does not have to be a state of the art facility. I'm assuming for the purposes of this article that you've taken my advice and turned a room in your home into a studio. Keep in mind that building a separate structure or paying rent on an existing structure elsewhere can be quite costly. You need to make some effort at soundproofing the room, which can be done rather inexpensively. This will keep the sounds from your start up piano studio from wafting to all areas of your home where it might not be quite welcome. And second, you will need to make sure that you have the equipment you need in the room along with room to walk around. Depending on what type of equipment you use, this could be a problem. An upright grand piano will not cause quite the problems in this situation that a baby grand piano will cause. Keep in mind that most beginning students will not need the benefit of a baby grand piano no matter how impressive it looks in the magazine.
Many teachers these days are opting for keyboards for use in a start up piano studio rather than full sized pianos. I recommend against this in general as piano keys feel completely different than keyboard keys and the sound is very different as well. There has yet to be a company that produces a keyboard that can quite match the resonating tones of an actual piano. I would assume that you at least have a piano in your home if you're considering teaching private piano lessons and are building a start up piano studio. If not, you might want to make that your first order of business. You'll also want all the accoutrement that is necessary in order to teach: metronomes, music stands, etc. It is recommended that all of these are readily available within your studio as well as within easy reach at all times.
The main thing to keep in mind when planning your studio is that you want to keep the costs at a minimum. Every dime that you spend on the facility takes away from your income. A piano that is in tune and a private area in which to practice and teach are the most important components. As your business grows, you can add other great things to your start up piano studio. ...
