Teaching Piano To The Very Young

Teaching Piano To Young Beginners

Teaching piano to the young beginner can present special challenges to a piano teacher. With these unique challenges come spectacular rewards however. Small children are often quite enthusiastic about learning and can be such a joy to watch as the light of learning fills their little eyes. If you are teaching piano to the young beginner you will be providing them with essential life skills at a very young age and might find that their enthusiasm for learning inspires you to become an even better teacher. Don't get too caught up over the age aspect when teaching piano to the very young beginner, remember Mozart.

When teaching piano to the very young beginner, you may need to make some adjustments to your traditional lesson plans. Very small fingers may need more finger exercises in order to strengthen and lengthen their fingers as well as to help them develop a better sense of coordination than they may currently have. It is important to remember that younger children will have many of the same challenges that older children will have only more severe in some cases.

Teaching piano to the very young beginner also means that you have a student that probably has very little if any bad habits to get rid of. This is often a very big plus as a music teacher. You can also be rest assured that you are giving them a huge boost to their abilities by providing them with the basic knowledge that takes older children many lessons to learn well ahead of time. You might want to make adjustments in your lesson times with smaller children or break longer lessons into mini segments rather than one long lesson. This will help alleviate the burden of the lack of attention span that many young children have.

If you are teaching piano lessons to the very young beginner you should also keep in mind that they will be more easily impressed by playing scales and such. Older students will not be as much in a hurry to learn songs (their parents are another story however). Perhaps the biggest challenge involved in teaching exceptionally young students to play the piano is that their parents are often expecting Mozart performances after only a couple of lessons. One of the many delicate balances when teaching piano is the balance between the needs of the students, the realities of playing piano and learning new skills, and the expectations of the parents. This is particularly true for some reason when teaching piano lessons to the very young beginner.
