Ask the average piano teacher how to become a wealthy piano teacher and you’ll probably hear “you can’t” for an answer. The general consensus is that teaching piano is a labor of love that happens to also pay the bills, but not much more. But that’s not true. I know how to become a wealthy piano teacher. And you can discover how to become a wealthy piano teacher too. The answers are right here in this article.

It’s all a matter of perception.

You see, most piano teachers don’t think of themselves as entrepreneurs. They don’t understand that they are actually in two businesses. Sure, they are in the business of teaching every budding Ludwig van Beethoven how to tickle the ivory and how to tell a treble clef from a bass clef, but they are also in the business of being in business.

That means that besides cracking open the music books, they also have to crack open the accounting books. They have to make time to separate the black and white keys from the black and white numbers. They have to learn how to run a profitable business LIKE it was a business and not a hobby.

If you want to learn how to become a wealthy piano teacher, you have to learn how to run a successful business. This means that you need to run a profit and loss statement, identify your overhead, analyze your rates, and determine what you need to do to raise your standard of living without working yourself into an early grave.

Does that sound impossible? It isn’t. In fact, the only thing I’m asking you to do is what every other successful business person in the world does every day — run your business at a profit. Want to know how to become a wealthy piano teacher? Make believe you’re a lawyer, or a doctor, or a plumber instead. No, I’m serious. Here’s what I mean.

No matter what business you are in, even teaching piano, you’re selling something. Shopkeepers sell merchandise, lawyers, doctors, plumbers and, yes, piano teachers sell their skills. And they sell it by the hour. If you aren’t getting top dollar for the time you spend teaching your students how to boogie woogie, you’re leaving money on the table. That’s money that should be in your pocket instead.

One of the keys to earning top dollar for your classical, concert and jazz piano skills is to raise your visibility in the market and make yourself appear to be more exclusive than your competitors. People with money in their pockets are willing to pay for exclusivity and the benefits that come with learning from the best of the best.

That’s only one trick you need to learn in order to discover how to become a wealthy piano teacher. There are so many more.<!--

It seems like such a complicated instrument to learn, but well worth it i think. I only have a KEYBOARD, it’s Yamaha. Learning this will enable me to play the piano though, right?

And, can I really learn how to read music from books? It seems complex! I need to teach myself and I know there are books out there, but do they really work?? Thanks!

I started taking piano lessons when I was 7 years old, I’m now 15. I’m not as good as I had expected I would be, but I’m good. All it takes is practice, and lots of it. The first couple years I had difficulty understanding how to read the scores, and I mostly played by ear. But now I can read scores very easily. It may seem complex at first, but it’s really quite simple. I didn’t have a piano when I first started and I think I remember correctly that I didn’t get one until I was about 10 years old. Before that I had only used a keyboard.
People who teach themselves how to play an instrument often go too fast. Just take your time and start with something suuuper simple. And than gradually build your way up. Just don’t go to fast, this can take a few years.

She said she wouldn’t want to be paid, but I insisted that she should be because I’m a difficult student. :]

So how much do you think would be a good salary for a high schooler who needs some extra cash?

$15 per lesson at least
my piano teacher charges $90 per lesson, so it can get pretty expensive. I teach my friend to play the piano too (; have fun!

I’m trying to learn how to play the piano without having to spend much money to learn. My cousin told me that he spent hundreds of dollars taking lessons from a piano teacher. What is the best way to teach yourself piano so that I don’t have to get a teacher?

I’ve been teaching myself to play the piano for about a year now. It’s pretty easy. All I did was search online for a cheap product that came with what I needed to learn (books, sheets, online resources). Of course you will have to get a piano or keyboard to learn as well, which can cost a bit more.

I just dug up the site I found when I was looking to teach myself piano. I’ll put it in the link thing below. I hope you find it useful cause I have been using it for a year now, and I can play most of the song sheets that I come across. The best thing is it’s pretty cheap, and costs way less than a piano teacher. It also takes some dedication and practice, but if you have the willpower to learn it, you will become good.

Hope you find this useful, and good luck fellow musician!

I play the piano for this choir and I know a lot about music. I even sing myself. But I’ve never studied how to teach a group of people to sing before. I’m at a loss because these people don’t sound very good. Any suggestions?

If you’re willing to take on the task (and it won’t be easy!), you have to start with the basics. If they won’t learn to read music, you’ll have to teach them their parts by rote, playing each individual part over and over until they learn their part.

Once they’ve learned their parts individually, you need to get them to put it all together. Some of the best ways I know of to do this are

1. count singing — everybody sings the rhythm of the song by counting out "one two ti four / one-and two-and ti-and four-and", etc. "Ti" is used in place of "three" becaue it flows out more quickly in rhythm without that tripthong in the beginning. At the beginning, count-singing should be done without pitches so that the singers are concentrating on RHYTHM only.

2. Once the rhythm is properly set in their head, add count-singing with pitch (but still no lyrics). This will help set the melodies and harmonies in their heads.

3. Chanting — again, this is a rhythmic exercise, but helps set the lyrics straight with the rhythm. During this phase, work on setting and correcting diction, making sure consonants (especially final consonants of words and phrases) all fall together. Proper diction during singing is one of the most important aspects, and is almost universally ignored by church choir directors.

4. Put it all together.

One of the most useful things I have found for my own practice is the creation of rehearsal tapes. This is a tedious process, but is becoming more practical with the advent of sheet music scanning software. I can scan a song, convert it to midi, massage the midi file somewhat with a music notation program, and create usable rehearsal tapes reasonably quickly (about 15 – 20 minutes per page of music these days). The trick with such a process is to create a separate rehearsal tape for each voice part, isolating that voice part on one channel (let’s say the left channel for convenience) while mixing all of the rest of the voices to the right channel, and mixing the accompaniment equally. This way, each singer can hear their own part clearly without confusion from the other voices, but while still hearing the accompaniment.

I’m going to teach the piano to kids who are JUST starting out the instrument. The problem is, I have a to-be-student child who is about 3. She can’t read nor write, loves to chat and has the attention span of a, well, 3 year old.

I’m very uncertain how I’m going to start her off. Trying to teach her the different notes and stuff would be too much, let alone reading the scores.

Should I start her off with playing by the ear or something? Also, how can I help keep her attention? :/

Im not expert at the piano but I am a mother and a nanna, as well as having trained as a teacher assistant for kids with disabilities as well as specialising in guiding childrens behaviours.

I suggest just making it fun, let her bang away on the keys for the first lesson just to satisfy her curiosity,

second lesson just try to get her to follow your prompts – hit a key saying the key name (for example hit "c" and say "c") this will promote learning the of correct terminology even if they don’t understand what it means at this time as they have fun.

maybe find out from the parent what tv shows the child likes, most have theme tunes, perhaps learn one and play it for the child this will then involve a personal interest in the music.

The most important thing at this stage is fun, they then get into the habit of attending lessons early and consider it part of their routine, they also learn that it is fun and associate pleasant memories with attending lessons, this is all preparation for the later learning. But dont underestimate how much some children will learn, while they are still very young, kids learning capacity at a young age is amazing they CAN be absolute sponges for information, hopefully you may find yourself with one of those children rather than a little terror on legs.

either way a steady approach with lots of scope for adaption – some on a moment by moment scale is the best way to go

hope that helps

I am going to start off on keyboard.

Playing an instrument by yourself is nothing but waste of time , regardless any books, or sites.
You must get a good teacher.

I’ve been messing around on pianos and keyboards since I was very young, but never had any formal lessons. I can’t read sheet music. I’ve always loved the sound of the piano and listening to other people play. How easy was it for you to teach yourself how to play piano? Did it just come naturally or did you have to work at it? Do you have any tips or advice?

It doesn’t matter how I think cos Internet could bring you the instruments you need to improve your skills, but the reality says that if you want to become a pianist or whatever instrument you play you need to sacrifice at least 4 hours a day without any other distraction than your goal of improvement.

Well are you wanting to play professional or are you just wanting to know how to play your favorite songs?
You can do it yourself. 8 months ago i knew nothing about piano. I am completely self-taugh. Here are a few of the sites i use to help me. The second link is where i get some of my sheet music. The other two help teach you chords and other things.
