Im trying to learn to play the piano, tips?

Im 15 now, and i have a keyboard. I just don’t think i could go for a teacher, so i was wondering if anyone had any tips to give me, I’m trying to teach myself. Any good books, sites, or anything to help me out?

The best way to learn is to have a teacher. If you make a mistake with your posture or with playing in general, it will take twice as long to fix.
This site is for general music/piano knowledge, so it doesn’t have many pieces of music: http://www.pianotricks.com/. Theory is still very important stuff, so don’t underestimate it. If you want to learn songs, it’s hard to do it with an Internet. People aren’t coaching themselves with a computer, right? =)

There are many levels of playing the piano. Most of us who have paid our dues find it laughable when someone approaches learning the piano in the way you are suggesting. I say laughable, but it is also very sad because you are setting yourself up for failure.

There are numerous "superduper, quick and easy, skip the hard parts and no more boring practicing" piano methods out there. Some boast by saying they will have you playing
‘Autumn Leaves" in your first 30 minutes. I hope you realize that this is not really playing the piano.

Playing the piano is like "Martial Arts". If you want to learn a martial art, you do not take one semester of Karate and then say"Now I know Karate". No, Karate is something you keep practicing for the rest of your life. It becomes a way of life. The piano is very similar. I have been playing for over 50 years now and I am still learning. My teacher is considered a Master Teacher, she only takes advanced students and even she still has a teacher because we all need someone to stay on top of us, to keep us sharp, otherwise the tendency is to become lazy.

Learn the right way, get a "Qualified" teacher and get started. Time is precious, don’t waste it. Shoot for success.

First of all, I’d like to say that it is a wonderful thing you desire to learn a musical instrument, for music is truly the only universal language. Teaching yourself will be a big challenge, and you must have the willpower to continue trying even when you want to quit. I used to play piano, but I never connected with it, and I regret not being able to play. However, I’ve been teaching myself how to play guitar for almost 2 years now, and there are some tried and true ways of getting better.
Number 1: This is the most important thing you can do when learning an instrument: Practice! You will never get better if you don’t practice, so be sure to set strict goals for yourself, and stick to them.
Number 2: Set time out of each day (at least an hour) to practice, and stick to it. If necessary, move the time you play to fit your schedule.
Number 3: Persistence. While practice may be the most important thing needed for improvement, persistence is the root of mastering anything new. Never give up on your goal, and always remind yourself that you may not be good now, but you will be soon.

Know of any free, online lessons for piano runs?

I’m looking for some online tips and lessons to teach me how to play fast runs on the piano. Specifically things like "cocktail runs" using 32nd notes and things like that. Any links would be appreciated.

please don’t learn from any online places. they are scams and a waist on moey. I suggest you go to your local music shop and buy some self learning piano books. but to be honest i would learn from a teacher but yeah…

How to give good piano lessons..?

I will be giving free piano lessons to two third graders (for my senior project). I ‘m going to teach the students seperately for half an hour every week for 6 weeks.
I’m getting help from my piano instructor, but I want to get some inside tips form other high school students that have taught kids how to play the piano.
Any advice or comments would rellay be appreciated!

Try to make it interesting. Try to make it very practical, instead of talking about the theory all the time.

Teaching Yourself The Piano?? HELP! 10 POINTS!?

I had lessons when I was like 6-ish to 8, and I took a couple classes last year (but had to drop out due to personal problems). I’m 15 now and REALLY want to be able to play again (and very well), but I would like to teach myself. Would you know how to go about do this? Websites? Tips? Etc. Please add anything helpful.

If you are hoping to play classical piano it is very unlikely that you can teach yourself. You stand a much greater chance of success if you have a teacher… even if you only see that teacher every other week.
Few people get to a very high standard without a teacher to critique, mentor and tutor.

My advice would be to get a GOOD teacher.

I am in the NY area and am new to teaching flute. Any tips on getting more students to teach? Plz help?

I also am a flute teacher in the NY area – where are you located? And far more importantly – if you are 18, and *passionate*, are you also highly qualified to teach flute? I can name at least 100 fine flutists in the NY area who have played professionally for many years, have multiple degrees form the finest conservatories, and have decades of teaching experience. I network with them daily through various societies and organizations for professional flutists. These (we!) are your competition. Are you studying with a very fine teacher? You say you want to make this your life – are you applying to any of the numerous fine music colleges in the area? Do you intend to teach under the supervision of your current teacher? I cannot in good conscience advise you about *how to start your business* when I know so very little about you – and have to surmise who you are.

Watch as many on line You Tube videos of pro pianists as possible. Watch You tube instruction, get Web instruction.

Practice a lot.

Learn how to read and the different rhythms. read about music there and Harmony.

im sumwat tryna teach my self how to play the piano does any body have tips?

With all the help available on the internet and from books it would be possible to teach yourself if you are diligent, but you could still learn a lot from a teacher, especially things like technique. If you’re going to teach yourself, start with learning notes, then scales and then chords. That will help a lot if you play by ear but if you want to learn from sheet music, of course, you’ll have to learn to read musical notation.
