can I really teach myself piano, with just the help of online lessons and books?
It seems like such a complicated instrument to learn, but well worth it i think. I only have a KEYBOARD, it’s Yamaha. Learning this will enable me to play the piano though, right?
And, can I really learn how to read music from books? It seems complex! I need to teach myself and I know there are books out there, but do they really work?? Thanks!
I started taking piano lessons when I was 7 years old, I’m now 15. I’m not as good as I had expected I would be, but I’m good. All it takes is practice, and lots of it. The first couple years I had difficulty understanding how to read the scores, and I mostly played by ear. But now I can read scores very easily. It may seem complex at first, but it’s really quite simple. I didn’t have a piano when I first started and I think I remember correctly that I didn’t get one until I was about 10 years old. Before that I had only used a keyboard.
People who teach themselves how to play an instrument often go too fast. Just take your time and start with something suuuper simple. And than gradually build your way up. Just don’t go to fast, this can take a few years.

If you are willing to put in hard work, practice and are really motivated then anything is possible. Learning piano on your own will be tricky but its not impossible, if you really want to then it’s well worth buying the books and looking into online lessons, believe in yourself!

Personal experience.
It would be a good idea to have a teacher to get you started, because they help you learn to read sheet music and give you constructive criticism on your playing which really helps. I started playing when I was 6 or 7, learned a few songs from my mom, and decided to get a teacher when I was around 8. I quit taking lessons when I was 12, and taught myself after that. I’m 13 now, and I would consider myself pretty good for my age. I learned everything on a keyboard (Casio), but I play on a regular piano whenever I get the chance (friend’s houses, school, etc).
Yes, you should learn to read sheet music. It will help you a lot and once you can read sheet music then you can play almost anything. A lot of sites have free sheet music, and it’s easier than tutorials (for me, anyway). It’s really not as hard as it looks.
The piano is a great instrument to learn, and if you stick with it then later in life you’ll be glad you did. It’s not that hard when you start out, but it gets harder as you go along. Books are great but a teacher is even better. Good luck!
