What’s the best way to teach myself piano/keyboard?

By Sheryl ·

I am going to try to teach myself how to play piano/keyboard? Any suggestions?

How easy is it to transfer from keyboard to piano? And are there any good music books out there that I should take a look at?

I am going to start off on keyboard.

Playing an instrument by yourself is nothing but waste of time , regardless any books, or sites.
You must get a good teacher.

You can flounder around for years, and still be awful – or you can call a good teacher. A good teacher is worth every dollar, and a poor teacher is a waste of every penny – and you are NOT a teacher, are you? No website will help – they can’t see or hear you. Just get a good recommendation, and pick up the phone.

The quickest and easiest way to teach yourself how to play is to make flash cards of each piano note on the bar and memorize what each note is. Make cards for the F clef and the G clef and by time you sit down to a sheet of music, your hand will soar. Learning what notes are what on the piano is easy-it’s merely a pattern and I am sure you could look that up on youtube!

while having a teacher is way better than trying to teach yourself(trust me, I taught myself for three years), alfreds has a good piano course for older beginners. I think that it’s called the complete piano course. Memorize the scales, and def memorize the notes. Try to get in as much classical music as possible. 8notes.com has free classical music. good luck!

If you go about it alone you will only succeed in TRYING to teach yourself. I got a teacher, and progressed much faster than if I went at it by myself.
Your teacher helps push you, they give you a reason to complete a piece and go in depth to understand the meaning of a piece before you move on.
In regards to keyboards v.s. pianos keyboards are crap. No matter how expensive, or how great people say it is, it will never stand up to an authentic, decent acoustic piano. Starting of on a keyboard is fine but never settle for one. You will probably feel like you don’t have much control over a real piano when you first switch because your dynamics will be all over the place. You should always prefer a real piano over an artificial piano.

God, words cannot describe my hatred of keyboards or "digital" pianos.
(Had to settle for one , but FINALLY bought a real one and boy am I so much happier!)
