How much money and time for piano and guitar lessons?

By Sheryl ·

I want to learn both…I love the sounds they make and listening to some slow piano/guitar songs help me relax..but I have never taken lessons on anything..How much can I expect to pay, how long should I expect the lessons to take…and last but not least..where can I get lessons..the last thing I want to do is go in some old ladies house that I don’t know to play a instrument I can’t play..but if that’s my only option? or are there some businesses that can teach me..or some that sell instruments but teach them as well?

Many instrument shops offer lessons… call the ones in your area, it never hurts to ask. I drive about 30 minutes to get to mine because I’m from a small town, and take them at a guitar shop (for guitar)

My lessons are 30 minutes (my instructor is kinda crazy so sometimes he loses track, and we once went an hour haha) and I pay $48 a month, so I guess $12 per half hour, which kinda seems like a rip-off —but totally worth learning the instrument correctly :)

I’m going to learn piano hopefully this fall, I also love the sound! I wouldn’t reccomend starting both at once especially if you haven’t any music background…they say guitar is a little easier, but I don’t know (theres a lot of technique stuff) Good luck and don’t give up! :)

it would be best-to learn 1 instrument at a time. The $$$ depends upon where you live. In NYC, lessons are from $25-$100 per hour.Check out any music school in your area for lessons.Also-check out any colleges in your area that have a music program.Think in terms of taking a 45minute lesson. You really get learn too much in less time.

well i would recomend learning one at a time it will just be too hard (for me anyways) to juggle learning two instruments at a time.

how much you pay

i used to pay 45 dollars for 1 hour lesson, 25 for half hour lessons (Canadian Dollars)

how long

It depends on how fast you learn. i am not sure about piano, but many people i know just took guitar lessons for 1 year and then stopped and taught the rest themselves. you can find video lessons on youtube and other video sharing websites.

Where to take lessons

Just pop in to your local music store, there are tonnes of them where i live, what you can do is go on google maps and search for music stores in your area.

Hope that helps

I currently take guitar lessons at a local music store, playing for a little over a year.

i got story for ya: to be nice, my oldest brother hands me a guitar and says if you aint gonna do nothin else at least learn how to do this, showed me what is a 5th chord and showed how to play Ridin the Storm Out by REO, come to learn that it was Whippin Post by the Allman Bros but i’ll get to that later, no i wont, i wish only to make this point, lessons blow chunks and a waste of time except for the teacher who makes money off of you as struggle to learn at the hands of a "master" who learned by doing and made it that far, believe me it is only a choice and the getting an instument, i bought my 1909 Packard piano for 14 dollars, no typo!, 14 dollars, turns 100 yrs old today, lol,, i have played every piano from here to Vietnam and still hvent found one i like better and that is no lie( i am no veteran, my wife is from Vietnam) my 1st guitar was a Conrad Byrdland copy point of all this is get one or the other or both, piano is easier, its always ready and mostly its in tune:) but if you choose a guitar i offer you this: learn chrds A – G minors and 7ths and you’ll be able to play all you hear in your head you might wanna after you get some dexterity to get a music bbok by a band you candn hear in your head, (the Beatles was mine) and it all runs down hill from there and 10-20 yrs from now you will remember reading a letter from some geezer on yahoo answers :)

usually 15$ for a half hour – 45 minutes.. but they teach you ALOT in that short period of time and give you stuff to work on. you can ALWAYS get lessons.. some professional musicians still have teachers. you can go to a music store which can teach you? and some people will go to your house. its all funn! i suggest piano ova guitar but dats my opnion.. its more fun jumpy for meh.

As mentioned by everyone else, the price/duration of lessons depends on who is giving the lesson. Stores will charge a little more, but I think that if you check your Guitar Center (if available), they have postings of people who offer lessons for cheaper. I give guitar lessons (and piano as well) at $10 USD per hour. I don’t have as much knowledge as they do, but I still think it’s a very reasonable price.
