How much would you pay for your child’s piano lessons?
I want to start a business of teaching piano out of my home. I’m thinking of charging somewhere between $15 and $20 for a half hour lesson.
I don’t have any degrees, but I was a serious student of classical music for 10 years. I continue to learn new music and perfect my skills.
What is a fair price to ask? Do you think anyone will be willing to pay $20 per lesson? That’s what I feel I deserve for my time and training. But the only thing that matters is what people are willing to pay.
I forgot to mention that I do have some experience teaching. I used to have 8 students, but I only charged $5 cause they were friends who have asked me to teach their kids. I have the patience, I know my stuff, and I know how children learn. They all did quite well, but I didn’t ever think the money was worth it. I worked hard at each lesson. I think I am worth more.
I use the Suzuki method and books.
So, some of you pay per hour? How old are your kids? I’ve never heard of a one hour lesson, unless they are in high school…
my daughter does piano lessons .
I pay $15 an hour and she goes once a week.
Her teach has degrees and has been doing piano for 40 years shes very good.
I think $ 20 is a bit much especially if its only for a half hour lesson, i wouldn`t pay that much. I would say $ 10 is a lot of half in hour.
Also you should think if you have the patience to sit and teach maybe a 4 or 5 year old how to play especially during summer when all they want to do is run around outside but you have to keep them focused for 30 minutes.
edit – my daughter is 4 she loves piano that`s why she wants the hour lessons. Even so with your experience i still wouldn`t pay 20 dollars an hour, I`m sorry but in my opinion its to high. You could just try to see the average price of other local piano teachers and average it out.

Check out the phone book and classifieds in your area and see what others are charging. Such services are often on Craigslist too. Then you’d have a better idea of what is fair for your area. Would I personally be willing to pay it? No, but that’s because I could ask their Uncle to teach them for free.

I wouldn’t consider a teacher that didn’t have documented training in the pedogogy of piano for my kids.
I’ve also never paid more than $15 per one hour lesson.
My oldest is 9 (hour lessons) and the middle daughter is 6 (half hour lessons). The youngest is 13 months, so not in music lessons yet.

My daughter is taking violin lessons and they cost us $12 for 1/2 hour once a week. She is four years old. I don’t think that I would pay $20 for any music lessons to be honest. I might pay $15 if the teacher was very good.

I would pay $15 for a half hour lesson for you to teach my child piano. If I wasn’t satisfied with the skills that he was developing I might consider going else where. Anything after $15 I would consider two high. If it was $20 I would want to see some credentials of some sort and even then I would really have to think about it.
My son is 3 years old. He is currently taking Acoustic Guitar lessons. He loves it . . but we only pay $10 for a half hour session.

I know nothing of wages/or normal fees on this topic.
I simply wanted to say that I love, and admire music by piano. We’ve have spent a lil over $715 on 2 Keyboards for my almost 5 year old. And would gladly pay $15/hr. To be honest if it was someone good (retired music teacher…ect.) I’d even go $20-$30/hr. My husband agrees with that.
Now I’m only talking 1hr sessions, 3 times a week though. So at most that would be $90/week. (same cost of preschool in our area)

Value music, and value the priceless fact that good teachers are hard to come by. With small kids, patience is in-valuable, and I’d have no problem paying decent.
Stick to your guns on price, you’ll do great! For every 10 cheaper people, there is one that cares and will pay for good service from a good person.
Maybe I’m cheap, maybe I’m not. But I think $90/week for 3 hours is good. I’d be happy with that pay per child anyways.
Didn’t you just ask this?
I pay $14.50 for guitar lessons for my son, but I always give the teacher a $20 bill. He charges the same for piano. He is a good teacher with lots of experience and great with children.

I pay $60 for a one hour session per child, I have 3 children taking piano right now. The instructor is a professional that has also taught performance music at a university.
