Is it possible for an 15 yr old experienced pianist to get a job as a live pianist?

By Sheryl ·

I’m 15 years old, I’ve been playing the piano since age 6, I’ve gotten a perfect score in NYSSMA for 3 years in a row, and I can be very professional when needed. I am in desperate need of a job, and although I could always be a cashier at a convenience store, I am first going to try to exercize every possibility of me getting a job involving piano, NOT including teaching. Would it be possible for me to obtain a job as a live pianist at some establishment such as a restaurant, hotel, coffee shop.. anything of that nature? Or possibly a paid accompanist for a chorus? I’ve been searching online, but nothing I find is close to home.. I live in the Suffolk County area of Long Island. Anyyy information or help would be fantastic :)
I accompany the chorus at my school every year, but it counts as community service

I don’t know if it pays, but when the school year starts back up again working as the accompanist to the chorus is a very good idea. even if you don’t get paid (or if you don’t get paid much) you can get like a letter of reccomendation by the chorus teacher or your school. and the best thing about that is you only have to do a few concerts in the whole school year, so you dont need to commit to a lot – you can get a second job, in other words.

I think you could do that. Another good job that makes a lot of money is to teach piano lessons for beginners and intermediate. When they get something right, you bring candy or stickers to put in their piano book, it’s pretty easy, i did it for a summer.

my friend did that, but i dont know if she got paid. i think she was just looking for the experience, she’s really serious about becoming a pro pianist.

Depending on the venues you’re looking at, and whether or not they serve alcohol, your choices will be limited because of your age. If it’s something like a coffee shop that accepts live performances from bands or music artists, you’ll need to put together a demo tape of 2-3 pieces of your playing and submit it to whoever it is that does their booking. You can contact them usually either in person, via telephone or online if they have a website. You will also need to check to see if they have a piano available to use. If not, you will need to provide your own piano, synthesizer or stage piano and amplification to be heard.

Good luck! :)
