Teaching Yourself The Piano?? HELP! *10 POINTS!*?

By Sheryl ·

I had lessons when I was like 6-ish to 8, and I took a couple classes last year (but had to drop out due to personal problems). I’m 15 now and REALLY want to be able to play again (and very well), but I would like to teach myself. Would you know how to go about do this? Websites? Tips? Etc. Please add anything helpful.

Thanks!!(:

If you are hoping to play classical piano it is very unlikely that you can teach yourself. You stand a much greater chance of success if you have a teacher… even if you only see that teacher every other week.
Few people get to a very high standard without a teacher to critique, mentor and tutor.

My advice would be to get a GOOD teacher.

It’s very near impossible. Just find yourself a teacher.

I’m in about the same position as you it seems. I took piano lessons, but not very seriously when I was younger and then stopped. Now I want to play again. It seems that you might be more serious about it than me though, if you want to play at a very high standard.

If that’s true, then you probably should take the advice of the other answerers here and hire yourself a teacher.

What I would do, though personally (and what I am doing) is buying piano music for songs I like. Say, My Heart Will Go On from Titantic, or Life in Technicolor by Coldplay. Both these songs were too hard for me to play when I got them, but since I enjoyed playing/learning them so much, I’ve ow pretty much mastered them. Get a harder piece each time. It works well for me, better than scale exercises.

If you really do want to get good though, you should hire yourself a teacher or at least follow some piano learning book – you don’t want to start off with the wrong techniques.
