How do I start teaching piano lessons?

By Sheryl ·

I am new to teaching piano and I am not sure how to start out. any suggestions?

Here are a few steps:
1. Marketing – get some print-out made to distribute to your neighborhood. Local library and music stores are good places to distribute your info. Decide on your rate. Call around local piano teachers and ask for their rates before you decide. Stay in the mid-range.
2. Find piano method books – I recommend piano adventure by Fabers. They are helpful and informative for young children.
3. Set your policy – This is important as you want to make sure students pay their tuitions on a monthly basis and not by lessons. Many students call in last minute to cancel lessons. With the policy, you are protected. You need to run like a music school and not like an individual. The policy will make a difference.

My brother put up ads at the library and pretty much any place where they had a bulletin board. Also, you can try posting on Craig’s list. That site will help you out too. And if you need ideas for lessons, go to http://www.zebrakeys.com/lessons/ They have 50+ free piano lessons posted on their site all with flash animated examples for each. My brother found the lessons on that site really helpful as well =) Good luck!
