How far could my son get self teaching piano ?He is quite dextous and has been playing the same tunes awhile?
I offered to pay him money instead of getting a new teacher .
He has already started learning the next two songs in his book
H is 11 years old.He has been playing about 2 years
maybe I will let him try for a few months and then get a teacher ,and see how it is .
it depends, actually.
I’m 14 years old, and I’ve been playing for the past 10 years. And in my opinion, getting a teacher is the best way to go. Even at $1 a minute, it is still worth it, because the teachers help a bunch with technique and other things. hah, my dad never offered ME any money, hmm…

Rock on.

He wont be able to get much farther as far as notation goes. When he gets older and wants to play in a group he will have a hard time reading music instead of playing by ear. I would recommend a teacher.

It’s up to him how far he gets/goes.
It also depends on how motivated he is.

it is not how fair will he get it is how much will he learn in how much time it takes us longer when we have no one to show as but when we do it is a lot faster and ezer

He will learn bad habits. Its not good. Just get him lessons for Christmas, they are worth the expensive to see your son excel. Plus you’ll always have music in the house. He will learn lots of fun songs and how to read music.
Then of course encourage him to join the percussion section in the school band. He’ll love that, if hes good at piano.

In band, play the clarinet
You don’t need a tutor, I just bought a cheap book on piano and I taught myself to play with no outside help whatsoever.

I’m pretty sure he will get far as long as he know how to read the notes on his book without writing them. He also needs to recognizes the other chords such as C, E Minor, A Minor, etc. Once he knows all of that, he will become a pro.

It depends upon how far you would like to see him go. If there is any chance that this is something he might want to do for a while then please get a teacher. Just teaching yourself a few tunes is one thing. But overtime, he will develop bad habits that could potentially take years to undo. Also, teaching yourself is much much less efficient. When you are just playing songs, you tend not to notice mistakes as much, or you just flat-out ignore them. And there will eventually come a time when he will have to learn the art of musical expression. This is something that I have never seen a self-taught pianists pull of. Never. And besides everything that I’ve mentioned, there is more to learning to play the piano than just playing tunes out of a book.
So can he do it? Yeah sure. But it will be very inefficient by comparisons standards, and he runs the risk of not only developing bad habits, but simply never learning some of the most important aspects playing the piano.
I guarantee you anyone who disagrees with me is not a college trained musician. I’m not trying to sound stuffy, but music is just too complex to master on your own.

the teacher makes the difference –
had a sweet lady teach me from 2nd grade to 11th grade
and I got away with murder
but when I went to college, my teacher there had retired from 20 years
teaching at Julliard in NY – WOW – did I learn a lot from her
she was fabulous and pushed my to my limits and past
teaching yourself – like learning to work on lawn mower engines
you know mufflers, spark plugs, and blades
but if you want to work on a Ferrari – you will need a pro to guide you
all the best

Masters in Music
It depends. when i was 8, i used to self teach myself the piano, and did so until i was able to play the right hand of fur elise mostly by ear bc I couldn’t read music very well, and needed a teacher to teach me. then when i turned 11 i finally started taking lessons. I probably wouldn’t have gotten much further without taking lessons.

Lessons are good for the basics in my opinion. I got lessons from one of my friends recently and she taught me the basics about finger placement, theory, and we worked on some songs. I personally don’t enjoy playing other people’s music. I try to make my own and play very often. So i suggest to get the lessons to put him in the right direction. Then let his creativity and motivation do the rest

It sounds like you have already made the right choice. For now at least. Sometimes a formal training in anything to do with the arts can destroy an individual’s natural creativity. Let your lad develop his style himself and see how it goes for a while.
