After you learn the basic notes and the structure of the piano it is easy to teach yourself. People only go to teachers to learn exam conditions so that we can achieve grading but usually self taught pianist are good for bands.

Begin with sight reading:
This is better for beginners because it can take years of playing the piano to understand and distinguish every note. This is also better because all people start off by playing from memory and slowly learning sigh reading.

You should check out;
the piano technical improvement guide
It list the best mehods of piano playing and how to progress

If you are serious about piano though and want to take it up as a profession you will NEED to see a teacher to get through your exams.

Some good books to begin with (I learnt with them) are the piano adventure books

They have some good songs in them but most importantly they slowly build up your knowlege and skills
after doing the first three of these books i can garentee you will be able to start trying to learn ANYTHING!!!
References :
I teach Piano

I would find some books ,cds and dvds about piano playing.
Also ,listen to piano music on cd .radio e.t.c. to get the sound ,rhythm right,
Be careful not to damage fingers ,muscles when paying.Wrong technique can cause muslce damage and muscle strain.
You can record yourself with a tape recorder or video camera to make sure your music sounds correct .Any errors can be heard while listening to a recording .It is very hard to pick up these errors while playing as it is quite difficult to play and listen at the same time .
Finally, it would be better to find a piano teacher , preferably more than one and one that you trust and feel safe being with .
References :
I would start by choosing a piece of music you really love. Attempt to play it by ear. After doing this thoroughly, buy the music and see what progress you can make with the real notes.
