Is teaching yourself piano hard to do?
I would like to play piano and think that I can teach myself to play……is that a good assumption
You can teach yourself to play only if you have drive. However a teacher, "quickens" the learning pase. So yes it is a good assumtion. But you wount learn THAT quick

I think it is a great assumption, if you like to waste you time. If you approached the piano correctly with a qualified teacher you would be miles ahead than if you spent the same amount of time teaching yourself.

Yes, it is hard to reach a good standard even with a good teacher and demands daily practice. Without a teacher it is even harder.
The level of difficulty depends on what you aspire to play…
Mary had a little lamb… easy.
Beethoven Sonatas… hard.
Know what I mean?

Like teaching yourself to fly an airplane, one could, but it would be a very bad idea to actually take off and fly without some instruction.
It will take you ten to twenty times longer to make inroads as far as any progress if you work on your own. You want a teacher from the start.
This is not a suggestion to ensure teachers make money, the suggestion is to spare you many wasted hours, and to prevent you from inventing very bad habits of playing which will haunt you: bad habits are hellish to undo or revise.
best regards, p.b.
