Teaching piano lessions, what should i teach first?

By Sheryl ·

I’m giving a piano lesion today & its the first one for beginners but i got a question what do i teach first?

Finger placement on the keyboard. (Both thumbs on Middle C.)
Finger numbers. (1-5, left and right)
What a musical staff is. What the clef signs are.

Are you teaching just as a favor to someone? Because there are lots of instructional books out there for you to use as a guide.

Teach Middle C. Then teach what an octave is. Then teach how to count in 4/4 time with single notes, half notes, and whole notes.

Shouldn’t you know this before you say you’ll teach someone??

Laughing.

In order to teach piano lessons it is important to have a good book for your students to use. There are many different series of books, you should go to a music and look at which one is the best for your students. The books that you use would depend on your students. The older your children are the harder your books need to be, by harder i mean that they can progress faster.

I taught piano lessons for 5 years and it is important to find a series and stick to it. The student will learn faster if they have a steady consistent book to learn form.

Well, if the person you’re teaching it to doesn’t know how to read notes (musical notes) then you should definetely teach them the treble clef scales notes (FACE and Every Good Boy Does Fine) and the bass clef scales notes (Good Boys Do Fine Always). Then show them which keys represent the flats and sharps and the ones that represent the naturals. After that, move on to scales and simple songs like Hot Cross Buns.

first, before even putting your hands on the piano, you should teach your student the note names of the keys, and where they go on the staff so that she/he will have some means of reading music.

then teach how to use the hand to play piano, to relax it and how to place your fingers on the keys, etc.

your student shouldn’t even put her/his fingers on the keys until she/he is able to do it correctly, as not to start a bad habit.

hope i helped!

theory is also important at the beginning
make sure you teach your students what certain symbols mean
also teach the student how long a beat is
to build a good building you always need a good foundation:)
